Amus(e)ing Boredom

Trying to define my creative muse. You know, that moment of inspiration to create something new. The Greeks had several goddess to do that. The 9 Muses. Today, the word muse can refer to anyone or thing which inspires creative inspiration and design.

The secret is not to wait. There is no definite moment. Inspiration is all around. One must keep working in anticipation. It’s the doing that provides the inspiration.

I read this quote on-line:

I’ll use this excuse for all the boring JUNQUE I design and make. It’s kinda true. If I did nothing, then that will be the exact result. NOTHING!

It’s much like learning from ones mistakes. Mistakes are necessary to the learning process. If I thought every design was perfect on the first try, I’d be the most bored person on earth, probably in the universe.

The really bad mistakes, I throw away. But I take away the knowledge of how and why it was a mistake. That’s learning.

I do like to play with the idea of a muse helping out my creativity. But it’s not a goddess that wanders into my presence with a magic wand.

Creative design is usually 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration. If I work real hard on the sweat, the inspiration becomes a part of the process.

I see a better way of doing, or another application of the design. If I wasn’t working on version 1, I’d never see (or make) version 2.

My CAD files are full of changes and versions. So is my collection of things made.

The best muse is when I am not deliberately trying to create that moment of inspiration in a period of doing nothing.

Someone asks me to design/make something they need/want. Then the (my) Creative Muse suddenly appears and gives me a big hug. It’s the best shortcut to getting the creative juices flowing. (Don’t take that too literal.)

The fact is, no one would ask for my design skill and creative ability if they didn’t know it’s something I do well and almost constantly.

Keep doing and my muse will be close by…
