First “official” blog post here in Quantum Design.
This blog is a “design effort” within itself. I will certainly be “fussing” with the design look and feel as well as trying to decide what content should be here. So my first design effort mentioned here, will be the Quantum Design itself.
This site is pretty much stock WordPress. There are probably a thousand options of configuring this CMS (Content Management System), I am likely to be changing the look and feel for quite some time. It’s what I like to do.
What I like to do the most is design and build tangible things. Objects. Something that can be touched and/or held. Depending on size…
The flash word today is “MAKER”. It’s a trendy movement to encourage the physical “hands on” creativity. Making tangible items in a workshop rather than managing a desk and computer data all day in an office.
Nothing wrong with either activity. The world today needs both. The water in the tub sloshed very high on the academic side within my “Boomer” era lifetime. The design/maker community is an encouragement to try the experience of personally making something that has mass and volume.
The design process however, is actually very “mental” at first. It starts with an idea a.k.a. a mental picture. From there (for me) it is usually moved to a basic sketch. If I am not using CNC (Computer Numeric Control) tools, a hand sketch is all I need for personal use.
I can build (or make) from simple sketches and what is in my “mental picture”.
But CNC tools and major manufacturing need detailed instructions. That’s where the computer has proven to be very useful.
I can build from within my head, but to get machines and other people to understand what I want, I have to produce the instructions for others (people or machines) to follow.
I have assembled a great many “kits” from plastic models, to R/C model aircraft. to complicated Amateur radio electronics. It was great experience but what I really enjoy is building my own designs.
That’s where I think I will steer the contents of this new blog. Ideas that become designs that become tangible items.
Well, at least it is a direction to start. <grin> -DK
